Stripes

So how should we wear stripes?

Do you love them or hate them? Why? Is it because you’re unsure how or where to place them?

This is a question I get asked quite often and yes the answer or at least a very quick simple answer has generally been that vertical stripes are slimming and elongating, while horizontal  stripes are widening. A recent study from the University of York is now disputing this long-standing theory and it’s quite obvious by looking at some of their pictures that rules can sometimes be broken or at least bent a little!

The trick as far as I am concerned is to wear stripes with variation in the width this helps to confuse the eye. Also wear a wider stripe where you want the eye to be drawn to. The darker, wider coloured stripe around the waist in the picture of Hayden Panettiere ( in the article below) actually makes the waist appear smaller.

The most important point to remember though is the actual style of the garment you are wearing, does it flatter your shape? If so then the addition of stripes in the correct area will really enhance and make the most of your natural assets.
